Satellite Imagery - Worldwide

The world satellite image is composed of images from 5 satellites.

The satellites are geo-stationary. They orbit the earth above the equator at altitudes of 36 000 km and move synchronously with the earth's rotation. Due to their stationary position, they are unable to monitor the polar areas and on account of this the images are cut off in the higher North and South latitudes.

The infra-red source images have been colourised: white to grey represent clouds in different altitudes, blue is unshaded water and green is unshaded land.
