Stratocumulus Sheets - Weather Events

by FMI and KNMI

In the case of no orography, cloudiness in middle and high levels dominates with slight to moderate rain or drizzle

Parameter Description
Precipitation
  • No precipitation or only slight drizzle/light snowfall.
Temperature
  • Cloud-covered areas in winter generally warmer, in summer cooler than adjacent cloud-free areas.
  • Reduced diurnal variation of temperature within cloudy areas.
Wind (incl. gusts)
  • Light to moderate winds.
Other relevant information
  • Aviation hazards: icing within the cloud and large wind shears on top of the cloud.
  • The advection of stratocumulus over an area can either prevent the formation of fog or disperse it if it has already formed.
