The Department of Numerical Weather Prediction in the framework of the partial legal capacity of the Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik (ZAMG), 1190 Vienna, Hohe Warte 38, plans to strengthen its team and therefore is searching for a

 Scientist for statistical postprocessing (f/m/x)

 40 hours per week (full time).

Job profile:

The new staff member will join the NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) application section at ZAMG and participate in close cooperation with the ACCORD consortium in the development and operational implementation of statistical postprocessing components for user-oriented short-range forecasting solutions.

The candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing user-oriented, NWP post-processing methods considering innovative data science technologies, in coordination with the ACCORD post-processing team
  • Applying statistical and machine learning techniques to support uncertainty quantification with special emphasize on weather-related extremes
  • Evaluation and verification of deterministic and probabilistic model forecasts from the ACCORD consortium
  • Permanent cooperation and communication with internal and external users
  • Participation on international project meetings, scientific conferences and reporting
  • Close cooperation with national and international scientific partners (e.g. Met services, universities), especially with the ACCORD consortium.

 

Requirements/Essential Skills:

  • University degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to meteorology, physics, mathematics, geosciences or computer science is required
  • Experience working with statistical post-processing techniques or user-oriented AI applications
  • Experience with large data sets, databases and meteorological data formats
  • Knowledge about statistics, evaluation and verification of numerical model outputs with appropriate software (e.g. Python, R)
  • Good programming skills in Python and code versioning
  • Ability to work/develop within a Linux/Unix environment and good knowledge of shell scripting languages
  • Fluent in English (both spoken and written), elementary skills and willingness to learn German
  • Ability to work as part of a team, high level of commitment, interest in continuing education/training
  • Unrestricted access to the Austrian labor market

 

Salary:

Analogous to the federal VB-scheme (v1/1) and depending on background and qualifications of the candidate, but at least € 3.050,20 per month (gross). During the probation period, the salary is less.

Working time:

40 hours per week (full time), in the framework of the partial legal capacity of ZAMG

Duration of employment:

The contract is limited for two years with the possibility of a renewal; new employees go through a probationary period of one month.
