The world satellite image is composed of images from five satellites. When you click on a satellite name below, you get the corresponding single image.
The satellites are so-called geostationary satellites. They are positioned over the Equator in 36.000 km altitude, move alongside with the earth and "view" a spherical calotte part of the terrestrial globe. They never can get sight of the polar areas; on account of this the polar areas are cut in the north and the south.
These are colored infrared images: clouds at different heights are depicted in white to grey, blue corresponds to uncovered wather and green uncovered land.
