No matter whether we talk about climate change, disaster mitigation, the global availability of energy or ressources, or the global food supply: we need to observe our planet, in order to understand it better in the future. And, only if we understand our planet well enough, we can assure the well-beiing of mankind tomorrow and into the future.
For this reason, one of the major goals of GEO is to put earth observation into the service of society, to make such data a global public good. Data shall be improved qualitatively, shall be better documented, and shall be made better accessible. An optimized access to better data will promote the utilization of the data, and will make sure that political decisions on issues like protection of our climate system, protection of human health and energy security will be made in a better informed way in the future.
GEO has defined 9 Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs) for GEOSS. These areas are explained here.
