Phenology the study of annual recurring events in plants and animals as leaf unfolding, flowering, fruit ripening or arrival of migrating birds though active in the 19th century, was for long time an abandoned field: But during the past decade phenology has rapidly become an important tool for climate change impact studies. In the 4th assessment report of IPCC the results of phenological research play a major role in assessing the observed changes in natural and managed systems. Plants influence the fluxes of momentum in the atmosphere, play a dominant role in the radiation budget and are part of the water cycle of the climate system. Vegetation is a dynamical factor of the earth – climate system and has positive and negative feedback mechanisms to the bio-geochemical and bio-geophysical fluxes to the atmosphere. Probably the most prominent biogeochemical feedback is the interaction between vegetation and CO2 concentration of the atmosphere. The study of that is a crucial area of for increasing knowledge of critical exchanges in the planetary carbon balance.

PEP 725 funded by EUMETNET and ZAMG will maintain and update the European phenological database created by COST725, but will also bring in phenological data from the time before 1951 and develop better quality checking procedures and ensure an open access to the database. PEP725 provides an attractive webpage and allows a user friendly download of European phenological data in only four steps.
ProjektzieleThe main objective of PEP725 is to promote and facilitate phenological studies and research by delivering a pan European phenological database with an open, unrestricted data access for science, research and education www.pep725.eu
