Synoptic situation
The enhanced IR image shows already at an early stage the level of convectivity embedded into the frontal system. The synopstic reports of that day confirmed this picture when multiple reports of lightning and thunderstorms were observed. As the cold front slowly moves eastward, more MCS develop as a result of shear with an anticyclonic flowing airmass over Eastern Europe. The highest level of convectivty is seen in the cells pictured as blue. These are the cells which are likely to produce hail.
