17 January 00 UTC - 18 January 12 UTC - Introduction and Motivation

The case: A rapid cyclogenesis - the initial stages of the catastrophic storm event of "Kyril"

The case under consideration was highly discussed within European NMSs because it caused catastrophic wind speeds in a stripe from west to east between about 45N and 60N. It was the well known warning situation of the storm Kyril. This case study does not concentrate on the storm situation which took place on 18 to 19 January over the European continent, but treats the initial stages from the first detection over the western Atlantic till a point of time where the responsible surface low reached the North Sea; this is the period from 17 January 00 UTC to 18 January 12 UTC.

How to proceed

If you want to take the course, please register by mailing to eumetrain@zamg.ac.at! Your trainers will then give you further guidelines on how to proceed.

If you are already familiar with using the conceptual model of a rapid cyclogenesis you can do this exercise without any previous training. If you want to learn about this conceptual model from the basis you should do the whole course and look into the following material:

  1. Go to SatManu, into the chapter "Conceptual Models", the subchapter "Rapid cyclogenesis"
  2. Go to SatManu into the main chapter "Exercises" and test your knowledge for this Concpetual Model. This is a CAL exercise where you get the answers on your decisions directly from the exercise.
  3. Go into EUMeTrain; there are two case studies which treat the situations of a rapid cyclogenesis : 19 - 22 October 2004 over Iceland and 19 - 20 November 2004 over Central Europe. It is interesting to compare the different cases and learn about the similarities and variabilities of this conceptual model
  4. Then do this exercise and send your results to the trainers.
