The case: A catastrophic snow situation in Western Europe connected to a substructure in a frontal cloud band
There are several reason for choosing this case as a conceptual model course.
- In the SatRep of 06 and 12 UTC there is a long cloud band streching from South Greenland across the Atlantic to Ireland and South England. It is signed with "Occl". From Belgium and the Netherlands eastward a Warm front shield "WF shield" is recognised. Another conceptual model of interest in this area is the Front intensification in the left exit region of a Jet streak ("FibyJet") which is identified over France at 06 UTC moving to West Germany till 12 UTC.
- At this day and in about this time period there was intensive snowfall in England, Belgium and the Netherlands which caused a lot of problem in traffic also in air traffic leading to a partially closing of some airports.
