08 February 2007/00 UTC - 12 UTC - Introduction and Motivation

The case: A catastrophic snow situation in Western Europe connected to a substructure in a frontal cloud band

There are several reason for choosing this case as a conceptual model course.
  1. In the SatRep of 06 and 12 UTC there is a long cloud band streching from South Greenland across the Atlantic to Ireland and South England. It is signed with "Occl". From Belgium and the Netherlands eastward a Warm front shield "WF shield" is recognised. Another conceptual model of interest in this area is the Front intensification in the left exit region of a Jet streak ("FibyJet") which is identified over France at 06 UTC moving to West Germany till 12 UTC.

  2. At this day and in about this time period there was intensive snowfall in England, Belgium and the Netherlands which caused a lot of problem in traffic also in air traffic leading to a partially closing of some airports.
