The differentiation between a classical Wave and an Upper Wave is not easy from satellite imagery alone. There are, however, some hints.
The cloud bulge of an Upper Wave is usually
less pronounced than
the same as
more pronounced than
less pronounced than
a Classical Wave. The WV image usually shows a dark area at the upstream part of the Wave which is
more pronounced
less pronounced

in case of an Upper Wave. In the VIS image, an Upper Wave is accompanied by
less bright

cloud compared to a classical Wave.
